American Heritage’s Byron Louis sets commitment date, includes Hurricanes in top four schools
Byron Louis has a decision to make soon.
“My first big boy decision,” he said.
The Plantation American Heritage running back set Sept. 21 as the day he will commit to his college football future.
He’s down to four schools — and, yes, the hometown Miami Hurricanes are among those four.
The other three: Georgia, Wisconsin and Florida State.
“They’re the ones that have been showing me the most love since I was in the eighth grade,” Louis said after running for 171 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown, in American Heritage’s 37-28 loss to Milton on Friday as part of the Broward County High School National Football Showcase. “Being able to drop the list down is honestly a blessing. At the end of the day, I’m still going to college, so I’m blessed. That’s all I’ve got.”
Louis, ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 16 running back nationally in the Class of 2025 by the 247Sports composite ranking, ran for 1,224 yards and 18 touchdowns last season as American Heritage advanced to the Class 2M state semifinals.
He said he is not planning to visit any of the four schools he listed as finalists over the next month before he commits. Louis has already made official visits to all four schools — Miami on May 31, Wisconsin on June 7, Georgia on June 14 and FSU on June 21.
“I’ve seen what I’ve seen,” Louis said, “and I got what I had to get.”
Louis noted how all four of his finalists have a strong emphasis on the run game. With the Hurricanes specifically, he rattled off the South Florida talent in Miami’s backfield — including American Heritage alum Mark Fletcher, St. Thomas Aquinas alum Jordan Lyle, Dillard alum Chris Johnson and South Broward alum Chris Wheatley-Humphrey.
“They’re building a stable back there,” Louis said. “Why not play with the best?”
As Louis gets closer to decision day, he said he has been leaning on a few American Heritage alums, including Fletcher, Sony Michel and Khalil Herbert, to help him through the process.
The biggest piece of advice he has received from them?
“Just pick the right fit,” Louis said.
