Results are in. Western football standout voted Broward High School Athlete of the Week
Davie Western football standout Robert Ortega is the Broward High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Ortega, a sophomore running back, scored three touchdowns in the first half to spark a 56-0 rout of Cypress Bay that put the Wildcats in position to clinch the District 13-4M title.
On the season, Ortega has 306 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 48 carries. He has also caught five passes for 26 yards.
Western is 4-3 on the season entering its Friday road game against Miramar.
Dillard football’s Nylan Maine, Cardinal Gibbons girls’ volleyball’s Fabiana Capone, Everglades boys’ swimming and diving’s Javier Colmenares and St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ swimming and diving’s Julianne McCrainie rounded out this week’s participants.
The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
