Fort Lauderdale softball standout Kaleea Washington is the Broward High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Washington, a senior, held Cooper City to just four hits while striking out eight in a 5-1 win that sent the Flying L’s to their first regional final. Fort Lauderdale’s magical season ended one game later with a 2-0 loss to Doral Academy.

On the season, Washington posted a 1.03 ERA with 123 strikeouts in 95 innings of work. She also hit .308 with six extra-base hits, nine RBI and 13 runs scored.

Dillard boys’ track and field’s Christopher Johnson, Somerset Academy girls’ track and field’s Aleesa Samuel, North Broward Prep baseball’s Riley Luft, Westminster Academy baseball’s Jesus Garcia and American Heritage baseball’s Mateo Serna rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
