Pembroke Pines Charter softball standout Destiney Ortega is the Broward High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Ortega threw a no-hitter, striking out nine with one walk to lead the Jaguars to a 3-0 win over Archbishop McCarthy in a Region 4-5A quarterfinal. The Jaguars’ playoff run ended with a regional final loss to South Fork to go 19-9 on the season.
Ortega finished the season with a 3.20 ERA in 21 appearances in the circle, striking out 78 batters over 107 1/3 innings of work. She also hit .368 (14 for 38) with two doubles, eight RBI and 10 runs scored.
Stoneman Douglas baseball’s Matt Ossenfort, Cardinal Gibbons boys’ volleyball’s Logan Keovaty and Western flag football’s Kailyn Echevarria rounded out this week’s participants.
The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
