Pompano Beach softball standout Sammy Murphy is the Broward High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Murphy, a senior, went 3 for 4 with two runs scored to lead the Golden Tornadoes to a 3-1 win over Plantation American Heritage and the District 14-4A championship.

Pompano Beach’s season ended Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to Jensen Beach in a Region 4-4A quarterfinal.

Murphy hit .350 on the season with four home runs, 15 RBI and 10 runs scored. She also went 8-6 on the mound 0.75 ERA and 200 strikeouts over 93 innings pitched.

Chaminade-Madonna girls’ track and field’s Tyra Cox, South Plantation softball’s Kelsey Vadnais, Nova baseball’s Gavin McClure and West Broward baseball’s J.P. Querales rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
