Results are in. Pines Charter softball standout voted Broward High School Athlete of the Week

Pembroke Pines Charter softball standout Destiney Ortega is the Broward High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Ortega, an eighth grader, gave up two earned runs over seven innings and struck out five and also went 2 for 2 with two RBI at the plate to lead the Jaguars to a 7-3 win over Davie Western on April 6.

On the season, Ortega has a 3.21 ERA in 16 appearances and has struck out 60 batters over 80 2/3 innings. At the plate, she is hitting .400 (8 for 20) with one double, four RBI and five runs scored.

Pembroke Pines Charter is 13-6 on the season.

American Heritage baseball’s Spencer Krasner, St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ water polo’s Rebekah Harkins, Western baseball’s Alex Pena and North Broward Prep baseball’s Nathaneal Coupet rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
