Results are in. Aquinas cross-country standout voted Broward High School Athlete of the Week
St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ cross-country standout Anthony Herrera is the Broward High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Herrera, a senior, won the individual BCAA championship with a time of 16 minutes even to lead Aquinas to a runner-up team finish. He finished nearly six seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Dillard’s Joshua Gammage.
His time at the BCAA meet was just shy of his season- and personal-best time of 15:58.9 set at the FSU Cross-Country Invitational — a time that ranks as the second-fastest among Broward County runners so far this season heading into the postseason. District meets take place next week, with regionals set for Oct. 26-29 and the state championship meet on Nov. 5.
More than 12,000 votes were cast in this poll, with Herrera receiving 67 percent of the votes. Calvary Christian football’s Reggie Heywood, University School swimming and diving’s Rafaella Araujo, Ameircan Heritage linebacker David Vadala and South Broward football’s Randy Phillips rounded out this week’s participants.
The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
