Roman Anthony was the best hitter on the best high school baseball team in the state of Florida — and arguably the country.

The Stoneman Douglas outfielder was recognized as such Friday, being named the 2022 Gatorade Florida Baseball Player of the Year.

Anthony, an Ole Miss signee who is expected to be an early pick in next month’s MLB Draft, hit a blistering .520 with 10 home runs, 40 RBI, 36 runs scored and 21 stolen bases as Stoneman Douglas went 30-2 on the season, capped with its second consecutive FHSAA Class 7A state title and a No. 1 national team ranking by Perfect Game.

What led to his success?

“Just working harder to be better than I was last game, last at-bat. Just always trying to work on things,” Anthony said in a recent interview with the Miami Herald. “Trying to improve all five tools, not just hitting. Trying to be a better all-around player, a better teammate, a better listener.”

MLB Pipeline has Anthony as the No. 57 overall prospect for the upcoming draft, citing his “raw power from the left side of the plate” as his biggest attribute. Baseball America has Anthony pegged as the draft’s No. 89 overall prospect.

Anthony is the seventh player from Broward or Miami-Dade County to be named the Gatorade Florida Baseball Player of the Year since the award began in 1986. The others: Calvary Christian pitcher Andrew Painter (2021), Archbishop McCarthy’s Nick Castellanos (2010), American Heritage’s Eric Hosmer (2008), Monsignor Pace’s Adrian Cardenas (2006), Westminster Christian’s Alex Rodriguez (1993) and Monsignor Pace’s Alex Fernandez (1988).
