Nova’s Metellius, Archbishop McCarthy’s Boisvert are Broward Bowlers of the Year
Colin Boisvert stepped up when his team needed him the most. Alyssa Metellius stepped out and competed as an individual once the state series arrived.
Both thrived in their roles.
As such, Metellius and Colin Boisvert are the Miami Herald’s Broward Bowlers of the Year.
Let’s start with Metellius, the freshman from Nova High. The Titans didn’t field a girls’ bowling team this year, so Metellius bowled with the boys team throughout the regular season. When it came time for the district championship, she competed as an individual for her chance to qualify for states.
The result: She bowled a 538 over three games to win the District 15 title. That was 54 more pins than runner-up Joss Collins from team champion South Plantation.
Metellius had a four-game score of 627 during state qualifying at the Boardwalk Bowl Entertainment Center in Orlando to finish 78th out of 179 competitors — the highest finish among 12 Broward County girl bowlers who advanced to state.
As for Boisvert, a junior and team captain at Archbishop McCarthy, he had to step up even more than usual when the postseason arrived. His younger brother Cole — one of three Boisvert brothers on the Archbishop McCarthy team — broke his arm just before the district tournament. Cole had ranked fourth in Broward County with a 190 scoring average, leaving a void in the Mavericks’ lineup.
Boisvert did the job, winning the individual district title with a three-game score of 688, topping runner-up Jason Marx from Plantation American Heritage by one pin. Archbishop McCarthy won the team title as well over runner-up Taravella to advance to the state championship as a team for the second consecutive year.
At state, Boisvert had a four-game score of 822 in the individual qualifying round. His 39th-place finish paced Broward County qualifiers, finishing 36 pins ahead of Taravella’s Zachery Kimbrell (786). As a team, Archbishop McCarthy finished 25th out of 30 schools.
