Taravella boys’ team, Palmetto’s Evan Viener highlight area’s state bowling performers
For a second consecutive year, the Coral Springs Taravella boys’ bowling team and Miami Palmetto’s Evan Viener advanced through qualifying at the FHSAA state tournament at Orlando’s Boardwalk Entertainment Center. Both reached the third round of their double-elimination brackets.
Taravella finished 11th in the four-game qualifying round to advance as part of the 16-team field that competed for the state title. The Trojans won their opening-round matchup against Palm Bay Heritage before falling in Round 2 to Orlando Hagerty and being eliminated after a third-round loss to Winter Springs Circle Christian in the elimination bracket.
The Trojans’ team consisted of Nick Bulzomi, Zachary Kimbrell, Braiden Meyers, Jeremy Smith, Bryce Collins, and Rey Maharaj.
On the individual side, Viener finished fifth in qualifying to advance to the 16-person individual final bracket for a second consecutive year, won his first-round matchup before losing in Rounds 2 and 3.
Two other bowlers from Miami-Dade and Broward — one boy, one girl — also advanced into the final 16 in their respective fields.
Southwest Ranches’ Archbishop McCarthy Anderson Albury was 15th on the boys’ side. Dr. Krop’s Thalia Nelson was 13th in the girls’ field in qualifying after finishing 56th last season.
As for the rest of South Florida’s participation...
▪ Columbus was the top Dade team during qualifying on the boys’ side, finishing 20th out of 30 teams. Stoneman Douglas (23rd), Ferguson (24th), Belen Jesuit (28th) and Krop (29th) rounded out the group. Five area bowlers in addition to Viener and Albury finished in the top-50 individually during the qualifying round: TERRA’s Remy Dou (31st), Western’s Evan Kallen (34th), Ferguson’s Lexander Perdomo (T-46th), Douglas’ Bryce Gregory (49th) and Taravella’s Bulzomi (50th).
▪ For the girls’ tournament, Archbishop McCarthy had the top team finish in qualifying, placing 19th out of 34 teams. They were followed by Krop (20th), Western (22nd), Ferguson (26th), Southridge (29th) and Mourning (34th). On the individual side, three area bowlers finished in the top-50 during the qualifying session in addition to Nelson: Western’s Kellie Mohanan (18th), South Plantation’s Joss Collins (42nd) and Southridge’s Joysbeliz Reyes (44th).
