Edison-Northwestern suspended due to inclement weather, plus Norland routs Pace

Miami Northwestern and Miami Edison did everything they could to play Thursday night at Traz Powell Stadium.

But after three separate lightning delays, the game was finally suspended with 3:26 remaining in the first quarter. It will be rescheduled at a later date. It was the fourth time this season that Edison had one of its games either delayed or suspended due to inclement weather. It was the second time for Northwestern.

Nearly two hours after the game was originally supposed to start, the Bulls and Red Raiders took the field in a torrential downpour after lightning left the vicinity. Both teams relied on their run game and struggled to move the ball because of the conditions.

Momentum swung in Northwestern’s favor after a punt block on Edison’s opening drive. The Bulls recovered in opponent territory and quarterback Calvin Russell Jr. converted a crucial third down with a 10-yard rush to bring Northwestern in the red zone.

On the next play, Russell found wide receiver Darius Johnson in the end zone. Johnson leaped over his defender and made a spectacular 20-yard catch, but the touchdown was negated due to holding. Then lightning struck again, and the game was suspended with the game still scoreless.

Edison has still only played one four-quarter game this season — a 21-19 win over North Miami last week. The Red Raiders season-opening win against Hialeah was abbreviated, and their second game against Booker T. Washington was suspended after one drive.

No. 4 Miami Norland 42, Miami Monsignor Pace 7: The Vikings (4-0, 2-0 District 13-2M) remained unbeaten with the lopsided victory over the Spartans (2-2, 0-1) at Traz Powell Stadium. The game was called late in the fourth quarter after a Pace player was blindsided on a Vikings’ punt return and stayed down on the field for several minutes. He was responsive, and while an ambulance came, the player was able to stand up and walk off the field with some help.

Rescheduled: The game between Miami Killian and Homestead South Dade was postponed Thursday and was rescheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. at Tropical Park.
