Coconut Creek continues to roll after shutting down previously unbeaten Plantation
Over the previous two seasons the Coconut Creek and Plantation football teams have become familiar with each other.
Meeting for the fourth time in three years, Thursday’s game certainly had the making for one of the top games entering the fourth week of the 2023 season.
And for the second consecutive game the Coconut Creek defense stood tall, this time concealing Plantation’s high-powered offense to earn a 36-6 victory.
The last time the Cougars began the season at 3-1, they defeated Plantation in week four 27-7 in 2021.
Germaine Gordan had two touchdowns on the evening. One came on a 42-yard punt return and the other on a 14-yard reception. Jordan Thompson, who got the start at running back over injured back Jamarie Hostzclaw, rushed for 143 yards on 20 carries and a 11-yard touchdown run.
“Every game is a big win for us,” Coconut Creek coach Johnnie Sloan said. “No real big games, we just need to come out and play our ball and play to Creek standards. When we play our game, no one can touch us. We’ll see what we did wrong and prepare for Blanche Ely next week.”
The Cougars earned their first touchdown of the second half following a safety when Gordon scored his second touchdown of the game on a 14-yard pass from quarterback James Hayes with 5:27 left for a 21-0 lead.
Despite three turnovers in the first half the Cougars went into the break with a 13-0 lead.
The first score came on a 42-yard punt return by Gordan as he raced down the right sideline untouched for the touchdown with 9:28 left in the second quarter.
Plantation, which averaged 52-points per game over its first three games, had only 42 yards of offense in the opening half.
On the other hand the Cougars got the big play they needed on the first play after a Plantation (3-1) punt.
Hayes found a wide-open Godson Sinelien streaking down the far sideline, hauling in the catch for a 80-yard touchdown pass.
“Creek played a really good defense,” said Plantation coach Steve Davis. “We knew that coming in. We’ll learn from this game and go back to the drawing board.”
The Colonels managed their lone touchdown on the night on senior running back Ryan Anderson’s 1-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
