Basketball season is heating up as teams prepare for the home stretch of the regular season before the playoffs begin in February.

The first installment of the Miami Herald’s South Florida Top 10 rankings has one of the nation’s top teams - Miami Columbus - at the top on the boys’ side. However, other contenders such as Riviera Prep, Mater Lakes and Westminster Academy will all have a shot to topple the Explorers in the coming days and weeks.

On the girls’ side, a perennial powerhouse - Miami Country Day - is looking to start a new state championship streak. But Westminster Academy, the team which ended that run last season, is still among the state’s best. Blanche Ely looks like a serious contender itself as do traditional powers Dillard and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Here’s a look at where teams stand through Wednesday’s games:

2. Sagemont (13-1)

3. Mater Lakes (14-2)
