Titletown South Florida: Strong starts continue for top contenders and dark horses alike
The Columbus Explorers are establishing themselves as the South Florida team to beat in the highest classification. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas and Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna each picked up another big win as they keep their national championship hopes alive, too.
But the big names aren’t the only ones off to big starts to the 2022 high school football season.
So while our second episode of Titletown South Florida highlights those marquee teams and where they stand in their push for state and national titles, Miami Herald sportswriters Jordan McPherson and David Wilson also turn their attention to a few teams who are flying under the radar in Dade and Broward if only because of the sheer amount of talented teams condensed in the area.
Like Homestead, 4-0 on the season backed by a stout front seven on defense.
Like Miami Norland, off to a 3-0 start to the season for the first time since going a perfect 15-0 in 2011 en route to their most recent state title when they had a little-known guy by the name of Duke Johnson as their starting running back.
And like Fort Lauderdale, which has outscored its first three opponents 92-21 and will try to continue building momentum before a three-week gauntlet that includes Coconut Creek, St. Thomas Aquinas and Dillard back-to-back-to-back.
Is there a chance for any of them to play spoiler? Time will tell.
McPherson and Wilson wrap up the show by previewing our games of the week, which include a key district showdown between Coconut Creek and Blanche Ely, a cross-county matchup between Miami Central and Dillard and a Thursday-night contest between a pair of former state champions in Columbus and Miami Northwestern.
