St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ lacrosse standout Chase Garey is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Garey, a senior midfielder, scored two goals in the final minute to help the Raiders beat Ponte Vedra 13-12 on Saturday for their third state championship and first since winning back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.

“As soon as that second goal went in, I’ll be honest, I was still in game mode,” Garey said. “But I started to feel it. I started to feel like it was time to put that ring on my finger, it’s about time I get that gold medal in my mouth. I’ve been waiting. I came to St. Thomas for this reason. It was a relief once the buzzer went off and the final six seconds trickled down. I ran back and was like, ‘I did it.’ I fulfilled what I came here for.”

About 6,000 votes were cast in this week’s poll, with Garey receiving 71 percent of the vote. Southridge girls’ track and field’s Alyssa Jones, Monsignor Pace baseball’s John Caballero, North Broward Prep baseball’s Yoel Tejada Jr. and Westminster Christian beach volleyball’s Emily and Zoey Matias were the other contenders for this week.

The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at 10 p.m. Thursday.
