Doral Academy girls’ tennis standout Valeria Ray is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Ray, a junior who is orally committed to play tennis at Vanderbilt, was instrumental in leading the Firebirds to their fourth consecutive team state championship last week. She went 5-1 in her team matches — 3-0 in singles, 2-1 in doubles — to help Doral beat Creekside 4-0 in the state quarterfinals, Stoneman Douglas 4-0 in the state semifinals and Vero Beach 5-1 in the Class 4A title match.

Ray also won the Class 4A overall singles individual championship. She has now won seven state titles in her high school career: Two individual singles titles, one individual doubles title and four team titles.

More than 30,000 votes were cast in this week’s poll, with Ray receiving 63 percent of the vote. South Broward boys’ volleyball’s Colton Bueter, Ransom Everglades baseball’s Nick Rubino, St. Brendan softball’s Alex Perea and Monarch boys’ tennis’ Corey Craig were the other contenders for this week.

The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at 10 p.m. Thursday.
