The results are in. Mater Lakes baseball standout voted Miami Herald player of the week
Mater Lakes baseball senior pitcher Erick Garcia is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Garcia threw a no-hitter and struck out eight in a win over Lynn Haven Mosley and pitched three shutout innings and struck out two in a 12-inning win over St. Brendan last week.
Garcia is one of 14 seniors that returned this season for Mater Lakes, which is coming off an appearance in the Class 4A regional finals where the Bears lost to eventual state champion North Broward Prep. Mater Lakes is 13-3 this season with wins over Plantation American Heritage and Miami Westminster Christian.
There were more than 20,000 votes cast in this week’s poll, with Garcia receiving 56 percent of the vote. Doral Academy softball ace Alyssa Zabala was second with 42 percent of the vote. Miami High boys’ volleyball’s Denzel Madrigal, Coral Springs Charter softball’s Brianna Godfrey and Calvary Christian’s Carlos Lugo rounded out the other contenders for this week.
The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at 10 p.m. Thursday.
