Poll: Which high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (March 28)

Even as schools went on spring break, there were several thrilling games which produced more notable performances by South Florida’s best athletes this past week.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in South Florida high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, March 31, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Erick Garcia, Mater Lakes, baseball: Garcia threw a no-hitter and struck out eight in a win over Lynn Haven Mosley and pitched three shutout innings and struck out two in a 12-inning win over St. Brendan.

Carlos Lugo, Calvary Christian, baseball: Lugo tossed six shutout innings and struck out five in an Eagles’ 4-0 win over defending state champion North Broward Prep.

Brianna Godfrey, Coral Springs Charter, softball: Godfrey went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double and three RBI at the plate and in the circle pitched six innings, gave up two runs and struck out 10 to help the Panthers beat American Heritage 12-2.

Alyssa Zabala, Doral, softball: Zabala tossed a three-hitter and struck out 12 in a 9-0 win over Westminster Christian in a matchup of state powerhouses.

Denzel Madrigal, Miami High

Denzel Madrigal, Miami High, volleyball: Madrigal totaled 48 kills, 25 digs and five aces to lead the Stingarees to the Silver Division championship of the Park Vista tournament. He also had 13 kills in wins over Cypress Bay and Orlando Bishop Moore at the Jungle Queen Invitational.
