The results are in. Taravella baseball standout voted Miami Herald player of the week
Taravella baseball senior Vincent Samuel is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Samuel hit two home runs, including a grand slam, stole a base and drove in five runs in a 8-4 win over defending state champion Archbishop McCarthy on March 18 to cap a week in which the Trojans went 3-0, including a 5-3 win over Knoxville (Tennessee) Farragut and 14-0 win over Naples Gulf Coast.
Taravella is 9-2 on the season, which also includes a win over defending Class 7A state champion Stoneman Douglas. Samuel is tied for the team lead with nine RBI and is third with seven runs scored.
There were more than 18,000 votes cast in this week’s poll, with Samuel receiving 61 percent of the vote. Cooper City softball’s Jordyn Hustey, Palmetto girls’ lacrosse’s Emma Weinberg, Coral Park baseball’s Zackery Gonzalez and Gulliver Prep boys’ water polo’s Daniel Preston rounded out the other contenders for this week.
The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at 10 p.m. Thursday.
