The results are in. Sagemont basketball standout voted Miami Herald player of the week
Sagemont boys’ basketball player Adrian Cruz is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Cruz, a senior, had one of the most memorable performances at state in recent memory. He scored 40 points in Sagemont’s 76-72 overtime win in the Class 2A state semifinal over North Florida Educational. Half of his points came in the fourth quarter and overtime. He made 11 of 20 shots from the field and sank 16 of his 18 free-throw attempts while also chipping in four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
“Once the whistle blew, it was like, ‘I’m here,’” Cruz said after the game. “I’ve never been on this stage, so it was like, I’m here and I’m grateful.”
Although the Lions lost to Orlando Christian Prep in the final, Cruz led them again with 15 points.
On the season, Cruz averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game to lead Sagemont to a 25-7 record and the Class 2A state runner-up finish.
There were more than 36,000 votes cast in this week’s poll, with Cruz receiving 49 percent of the vote. Columbus boys’ basketball’s Cameron Boozer (34 percent), North Miami girls’ wrestling’s Mya Bethel (six percent), South Dade boys’ wrestling’s Sawyer Bartelt (six percent) and Stranahan boys’ basketball’s Hykeem Williams (five percent) rounded out the other contenders for this week.
The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at 10 p.m. Thursday.
