The results are in. Southwest wrestling standout voted Miami Herald player of the week

Southwest Miami wrestler Gabriel Tellez is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Tellez, a sophomore, won the Region 4-3A title at 106 pounds to help the Eagles clinch a share of the regional team championship with Homestead South Dade. He entered the state tournament with a 42-2 record.

There were about 1,200 voters in this week’s poll, with Tellez receiving 77 percent of the vote. Plantation American Heritage girls’ basketball’s Ta’Niya Latson, Columbus boys’ basketball’s Cayden Boozer, Coral Springs Charter wrestling’s Michael Mocco and Doral Academy boys’ soccer’s Mateo Hincapie rounded out the other contenders.

The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at 10 p.m. Thursday.
