Edison boys’ soccer coach removed after using ineligible players in district tournament

Miami Edison boys’ soccer coach Wilnord Emile has been removed from his coaching position after using ineligible players in the District 13-3A tournament, which serves as the opening rounds of the Florida High School Athletic Association’s state playoff bracket.

The school self-reported the violation to the Greater Miami Athletic Conference and the FHSAA. Edison forfeited the two tournament games against SLAM Academy on Jan. 29 and host Miami Country Day on Jan. 31 as well as a regular-season game against North Miami Beach on Jan. 15.

The FHSAA and Miami-Dade County Public Schools are investigating the matter. It is believed the three students — ages 20, 17 and 15 — could have ties to the Haitian junior national soccer team, but the school district said it has no knowledge of it at this time.

At this time, neither the three students nor anyone else in the Edison athletic department outside of Emile will face discipline at this time. However, the allegations have been sent to the school district’s Office of Professional Standards, a spokeswoman wrote in an email to the Miami Herald.

“We await the results of the FHSAA investigation to determine additional disciplinary actions for any involved parties,” Daisy Gonzalez-Diego, chief communications officer for the school district, wrote in the email.

Edison athletic director David Schorr did not return requests for comment.

“Fairness, good sportsmanship and integrity are principles we live and play by at Miami-Dade County Public Schools,” the school district said in a statement. “Actions that run contrary to these values are dealt with swiftly and result in serious consequences. As soon as the allegations surfaced, the school’s administration took immediate and corrective steps to address this situation, including forfeiting games, self-reporting to the appropriate athletic entities, and removing the head coach from his coaching duties. Further disciplinary measures are being considered.”
