St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage again sweep Broward All-Sports awards
The Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders added six more state titles to their trophy case this year. Plantation American Heritage added three of its own.
So it should come as no surprise that the two schools, once again, are being honored with the Miami Herald’s All-Sports Awards in Broward County for the 2025-2026 athletic season.
In addition to the overall All-Sports award, the Herald also gives out the Boys’ Major Sports Award, which recognizes success across six sports (football, basketball, soccer, baseball, track and field, and wrestling), and the Girls’ Major Sports Award, which looks at how schools fared across five sports (indoor volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, and softball).
Both schools swept all three awards in their respective classifications, with Aquinas winning the large schools division and American Heritage in the small schools division.
For St. Thomas Aquinas, the Raiders’ half-dozen state titles this year came in football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ soccer, baseball and boys’ water polo.
The football title was the Raiders’ seventh in a row and extended their FHSAA record to 17 total titles. The boys’ basketball and baseball teams have now gone back-to-back to bring their overall totals to three and five, respectively. The girls’ basketball team won it all for the fifth time in the past six years, the girls’ soccer team won for the 16th time overall (extending its FHSAA record) and first time since 2017, and the boys’ water polo team won a state title for the third time.
Additionally, STA’s boys’ track and field, girls’ volleyball, beach volleyball, flag football and boys’ lacrosse teams were state runners-up and two other teams — boys’ soccer and girls’ water polo — advanced to the state semifinals and boys’ tennis reached the state quarterfinals.
The girls’ lacrosse and boys’ volleyball teams also advanced to the regional final. And to further add to the success, the girls’ swimming and cross-country teams finished sixth at state.
American Heritage, meanwhile, won team state titles of its own in football, girls’ soccer and girls’ golf.
The football title was the school’s seventh overall and second under fourth-year coach Mike Smith. The girls’ soccer team now has 15 state titles and has won four in a row. And American Heritage’s girls’ golf team now has 12 total state titles, including six since 2017.
Additionally, the Patriots’ boys’ soccer team finished as state runner-up, while the baseball and girls’ basketball teams advanced to the state semifinals and the boys’ golf team finished in third at state.
