American Heritage’s Zamarii Sanders is Broward Boys’ Track and Field Athlete of the Year
Zamarii Sanders’ sophomore track and field season saw him finish as part of a record-setting relay, win an individual title and help Plantation American Heritage win just its third-ever team state title.
As such, Sanders is the Miami Herald’s Broward Boys’ Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Let’s start with the historical portion of Sanders’ performance at state. He ran the third leg of the Patriots’ 400-meter relay that posted a time of 39.39 seconds — the first time ever a Florida high school relay ran sub-40 seconds in the event. Sophomore twins Brandon and Braylen Bennett along with Xavier Lucas rounded out the relay group.
The previous state record was held by the American Heritage quartet of Patrick Surtain Jr., Tyson Campbell, Jaden McBurrows, and Anthony Schwartz, which ran 40.14 seconds in 2018.
Sanders also added to his strong performance at state by winning the 200-meter dash in a time of 20.58 seconds. He was one of four American Heritage runners to pick up points in the event, followed by Brandon Bennett in third (21.07), Braylen Bennett a tick behind in fourth (21.08) and Braden Parris in sixth (21.12).
His performance built off a productive freshman campaign in which he anchored American Heritage’s 400-relay that won state and in which he finished fifth in the 100-meter dash.
Now, Sanders has two more years to see how he can build upon what he did this year.
Sanders is also a starting wide receiver on the Patriots’ football team and a top prospect in the Class of 2026.
