Coconut Creek’s American Top Team can add another champion to its roster.

Brazilian Amanda Nunes (13-4) defeated Miesha Tate (18-6) in the main event to become the new women’s bantamweight champion at UFC’s historic event, UFC 200, which occurred Saturday, July 9 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Nunes, who lives in South Florida, defeated Tate by submitting the champ in the first round.

The new champion’s punches were clean and sharp, and when Tate hit the ground from them, a patient Nunes then pounced, securing a chokehold submission, which forced Tate to tap.

UFC welterweight champ Robbie Lawler also trains at American Top Team in (South Florida) Coconut Creek.

In a much anticipated fight, WWE superstar turned professional mixed martial artist Brock Lesnar defeated veteran Mark Hunt by unanimous decision.

Lesnar, who last fought in UFC in 2011, used his power and amateur wrestling background to bring down Hunt, who is recognized for his powerful hands. Lesnar attempted to finish the fight early, but Hunt refused to succumb.

“He has a coconut head,” Lesnar said at the post-fight press conference.

Lesnar is scheduled to wrestle Randy Orton in WWE’s biggest event of the summer, SummerSlam, on pay-per-view in August.

When asked if he would return to the octagon, Lesnar said he wasn’t sure.

Also, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defeated Anderson Spider Silva by unanimous decision in a non-title fight. The respected Silva was a last minute replacement for Jon Jones, who was removed from the card because of a doping violation.

Former featherweight champion Jose Aldo defeated Frankie Edgar to become the interim champion. Aldo and Conor McGregor, seated ringside, taunted one another after the fight.

Former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez defeated Travis Browne.
