WWE alum Eric Young proves his worth by winning the Impact Wrestling title on AXS TV
Eric Young returned to Impact Wrestling recently to make a statement, and on Tuesday he did just that with an exclamation point.
Young defeated Eddie Edwards in the main event of Impact Wrestling on AXS TV to become the new Impact Wrestling World Champion.
This is EY’s second climb to the top of the Impact Wrestling mountain.
In April 2014, he beat Magnus (Nick Aldis) for the title.
Certain wrestlers possess an underdog quality which captures your heart, cheering for them, supporting them wholeheartedly, i.e. Daniel Bryan, Kofi Kingston, Eric Young.
Young, who was released by WWE in April because of budget cuts stemming from the pandemic, took the high road upon his departure. He enjoyed his time with SAnity in NXT, but on the main roster, it just did not work out.
That left the door open for an Impact Wrestling return, and he smashed through that door, making an impact immediately at Slammiversary in July as a surprise participant in a five-way match for the Impact World Championship. He eliminated Trey before being eliminated by Rich Swann. He then proceeded to attack Swann with a steel chair and injure Swann’s knee, establishing himself as a top heel.
Deonna Purrazzo needed a change of scenery, too. Another caught in the WWE budget pendulum, this NXT superstar took her talents to Impact. A good move by The Virtuosa as she also made a mark expeditiously, winning the Knockouts title at Slammiversary.
Now Purrazzo and Young are the two top champions of the building, growing professional wrestling company, led by Young’s friend and mentor Scott D’Amore, Don Callis and Ed Nordholm.
In my audio interview with Eric Young, he discusses his Impact Wrestling title win, Eddie Edwards, his hometown, WWE, NXT, other projects, fishing, voice, name and more.
Impact Wrestling formed in 2002 as NWA-Total Nonstop Action (TNA), which later became Impact Wrestling. Slammiversary 2020 celebrated its 19th year, quite an accomplishment.
There have been 49 title reigns in its history with Young being the latest.
