UFC career on the rise for Gillian Robertson, a South Florida local born in Niagra Falls

UFC Fight Night on ESPN is Saturday, and the prelims feature South Florida’s Gillian “The Savage” Robertson (7-4) against Cortney “Cast Iron” Casey (9-7) in a flyweight bout.

Robertson is 4-2 in UFC, competing throughout the world, including Sao Paulo, Brazil; Prague, Czech Republic; Liverpool, England; and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where she was cheered liked a hero.

That’s because Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada is her birthplace.

Robertson grew up in Port St. Lucie, Florida, after a brief stay in Miami. Her mom enjoyed the quieter atmosphere of Port St. Lucie, which is approximately 115 miles north of a bustling Miami.

Robertson, who currently lives in Margate (closer to Fort Lauderdale) and trains in Port St. Lucie, is planning a return move to Port St. Lucie.

Being impulsive is one of her prime characteristics, and it’s taken her to this level. She’s fighting for the top MMA promotion UFC and seen on a top sports cable channel ESPN. Not bad for a small-town girl.

The 25-year-old fighter began her MMA journey at age 18. She did not have aspirations of becoming an MMA fighter and actually started training in cardio kickboxing in Port St. Lucie at 16 to get in shape. She opted on a whim to test herself in MMA, eventually landing with American Top Team in Coconut Creek.

A determined, tough and technical fighter, Robertson drove 90 miles to train at ATT, would rest in her car between classes/sessions and then return home. When American Top Team Legacy opened in Port St. Lucie, she made that location her home training base. Two months after her 18th birthday, she made her MMA debut in 2016 in an amateur fight.

Trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Robertson credits UFC alum Din Thomas for his outstanding coaching. She earned her big break as one of the featured fighters on The Ultimate Fighter 26 UFC TV series in 2017.

In my audio interview with Robertson, she discusses her nickname, MMA, UFC, her dog, her red hair, her parents, American Top Team, Tecia Torres, South Florida, Coach Din Thomas, a Niagra Falls barrel, fighting in her native Canada and more.

A graduate of (Fort Pierce) Westwood High School, she earned an associate’s degree in general education. She is an advocate for animals, especially dogs and horses. She’s worked for a wildlife organization, a horse rescue, a vet’s office and the Humane Society. She is active on social media with her cause as is her 12-year-old pitbull, who has his own Instagram account (robthedog772).
