WWE Champ Drew McIntyre turns tables by issuing challenges to Seth Rollins and Tyson Fury

The day after WrestleMania 36, the front pages of UK media featured prominent stories on The Queen as well as WWE Superstar Drew McIntrye.

How amazing is that to be displayed alongside reports on The Queen.

In that moment it certainly verifies you did something very special, and he did, winning the WWE championship, first UK citizen to do so.

Hey, not just the UK, but the world took notice, which included heavyweight boxing champ Tyson Fury and former UFC champ Colby Covington, both interested in competing against the new WWE champ.

McIntyre actually challenged Fury.

Like Floyd Money Mayweather, the standout boxer already has some WWE experience.

In his pro wrestling debut, Fury beat WWE Superstar Braun Strowman (the current WWE Universal champ) in October in Saudi Arabia. Covington, who trains MMA at American Top Team in (South Florida) Coconut Creek, has that pro wrestling swag, Ric Flair style. He is a trash talker, athletic and a pro wrestling fan.

Here is my audio interview with new WWE Champ Drew McIntyre.

The Champ discusses WWE standout Seth Rollins, boxing champ Tyson Fury, former UFC champ Colby Covington, WrestleMania 36, Brock Lesnar, Gronk, NXT, Triple H, United Kingdom, The Queen, Scotland and more.

Becoming WWE Champion

The Scottish Terminator Drew McIntyre won the WWE title by beating the Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman) in the main event of Night 2 of WrestleMania 36 PC Orlando.

He epitomizes perseverance as he is making the most of a rare second chance in the company and made history in the process. He became the first wrestler from the UK (Ayr, Scotland) to win the WWE title.

Note: WWE Superstar Sheamus is a former WWE champion from Cabra, Dubin, Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but Dublin is not.

McIntyre, who signed with WWE in 2007, finally lived up to the lofty expectations from his first go-around with WWE, when he was tabbed The Chosen One by Mr. McMahon.

They say you only get one chance to make a first impression, and that’s true, but McIntyre is proof you can get a second chance to make a better one. It took 13 years to fulfill that destiny, including being released in 2014 and re-signing in 2017.

After referee Shawn Bennett handed McIntyre the WWE title and raised his hand in triumphant victory at WrestleMania 36, McIntyre clutched the championship belt, staring at it, hugging it dearly while basking emotionally from his knees near the middle of the ring.

With Lesnar prone in the middle of the ring and Heyman watching from just outside it, an elaborate WrestleMania 36 set at the Performance Center engulfed McIntyre as he climbed the ropes, held the title outward to one side and yelled exuberantly.

What a cool visual and awesome way to close that historic WrestleMania, taped matches airing two nights with no fans because of coronavirus concerns. The event was deemed a success, delivering some cool, heart warming, top match worthy and unique WrestleMania moments.

With McIntyre’s efforts, it’s more than fans witnessing a WrestleMania moment, which is great in itself. It’s one of those moments where you feel good about the outcome for a hard working and mentally matured individual on his roller coaster ride.

Actually, the ride continues. McIntyre, the champion, stars on WWE Monday Night Raw on USA Network.

After recently beating Big Show, Andrade and Angel Garza, McIntrye now sets his sights on another outstanding talent.

And, unprecedented, McIntyre the champ is the one issuing the challenges, nabbing former champ Seth Rollins as his next major test.

McIntyre will look to pass with flying colors as he defends the WWE title against the self-proclaimed Monday Night Messiah Rollins at WWE Money in the Bank on May 10 streaming on WWE Network from WWE Headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut.

Prior to his latest achievement, McIntyre already carried quite the credentials, Hall of Fame worthy, and he’s only age 34.

McIntyre won the TNA Impact Wrestling title, the Evolve title, the FCW title, the WWE Intercontinental title, and the NXT title. He is also a multi-time tag champ: Evolve with Johnny Gargano, Evolve with Chuckie T.; FCW with Wade Barrett; WWE with Cody Rhodes; WWE with Dolph Ziggler. Not to be outdone, he was the 2020 Royal Rumble winner (another UK first), choosing WWE Champ Brock Lesnar as his WrestleMania 36 opponent.

During these trying times, WWE continues to provide weekly entertainment with new episodes of SmackDown (Fridays on FOX), NXT (Wednesdays on USA Network), Main Event (Hulu), 205 Live (WWE Network), and Raw (USA Network).

See WWE Champ Drew McIntyre weekly on WWE Monday Night Raw at 8 p.m. ET on USA Network.

Drew McIntyre Bio Via WWE

While many fellow 15-year-olds were worried about sitting at the “popular table” at lunchtime, Drew McIntyre was already training to become a WWE Superstar. He didn’t have to wait terribly long to achieve his dream, either, as the endlessly athletic Scotsman skyrocketed from the U.K. independent scene to WWE before he was old enough to rent a car.

McIntyre began training in 2001 at Frontier Wrestling Alliance’s Academy in London. He debuted in 2003 for British Championship Wrestling in the Greater Glasgow area. He signed with WWE in 2007.

The outlook was so bright for the 6-foot-5 McIntyre that when he first arrived, Mr. McMahon labeled him a “future World Champion.” The Chairman was eventually proven correct, though fulfilling that prophecy did not come easily for McIntyre.

He enjoyed plenty of success early on, capturing an Intercontinental Championship and a WWE Tag Team Championship. Later, he rocked out alongside Jinder Mahal and Heath Slater as the memorable faction 3MB. But in 2014, after becoming, by his own admission, complacent, McIntyre was released from his WWE contract.

The release turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of licking his wounds over losing his dream job, McIntyre set out on a worldwide wrestling odyssey. During his global trek, he transformed into one of sports-entertainment’s most in-demand players, and he returned to WWE three years later — stronger, hungrier and decidedly more grizzled than when he left.

Despite receiving offers from both Raw and SmackDown, McIntyre chose to sign with NXT, stating that he wanted to compete on the world’s toughest roster. He clubbed through every Superstar thrown his way and won the NXT Title from Bobby Roode at TakeOver: Brooklyn III in August 2017.

Then, in the 2018 Superstar Shake-up, McIntyre shocked everybody yet again when he emerged alongside Dolph Ziggler and beat down Titus Worldwide to officially become part of Monday Night Raw. The dangerous duo later defeated The B-Team to capture the Raw Tag Team Championship and formed an alliance with Braun Strowman. The union eventually ended, but McIntyre’s rise was only beginning.

McIntyre secured himself a long-awaited World Championship opportunity when he won the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match in January 2020. The Scotsman took his career to the next level with a win over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36 to capture his first WWE Championship, finally earning the World Championship that Mr. McMahon had predicted.

Loving nothing more than to mix it up in a brawl, McIntyre looks right at home in any ring he enters, and the WWE Universe is all too happy to have him. When the big Scot enters the squared circle, the fight’s on.
