Upcoming local shows including controversial wrestler making her South Florida debut
Coastal Championship Wrestling, an established and long-time indie promotion in South Florida, is giving Sexy Star a second chance.
Star, 35, who was criticized harshly by the wrestling community (especially wrestlers) for purposely injuring an opponent in August in Mexico, will make her South Florida debut on Saturday as part of Coastal Championship Wrestling's Cinco de Mayo show at Coyo Taco in Wynwood in Miami-Dade County.
Bell time is 7 p.m.
Star will team with local indie wrestler Chelsea Durden against Lucha Underground's Ivelisse and two-time Shimmer Champ Mercedes Martinez. They have worked with Star before without issue.
CCW is run by Pablo Marquez, who was trained by Larry Sharpe at the famous Monster Factory in New Jersey. He wrestled for the original ECW and was Babu, the manservant to Tiger Ali Singh in WWE. He also competed on the indies in the United States, for IWA and WWC in Puerto Rico and referee'd in Spain.
Marquez, 44, knows the importance of second chances. Originally from Ecuador, he grew up in a rough neighborhood in Queens, New York, not following a good path. He got a second chance in life thanks to pro wrestling, and now he is paying it forward.
Marquez received positive reports on Star from respected talent in the business leading into the event, and this will be her first match since the incident.
A native of Mexico, Star began her wrestling career in 2006. Also trained in boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai, she is a the three-time AAA Reina de Reinas champion and former Lucha Underground champ. In 2016, Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranked her No. 9 of the best 50 female singles wrestlers in the PWI Female 50.
Star claimed to be the victim (being bullied on social media) stemming from the match aftermath of AAA's Triplemania XXV, involving her, Ayako Hamada, Lady Shani and Rosemary, who she injured with an armbar, (according to Rosemary). Star does not feel she did anything wrong, but AAA stripped her of the title. She also lost some bookings and respect.
In an interview published in October, Rosemary said she later believed she was not the intended target, and that things got carried away. She said heat existed between Star and Hamada and Shani, and actual fighting occurred with those three during the match.
Rosemary, who had a severe biceps and triceps strain, was upset that Star would not take accountability for what happened.
Star, Durden, Ivelisse and Martinez are part of a solid card at Coyo Taco in Wynwood.
Also, international star Blue Demon Jr., Mexico’s most famous exotico wrestlers Miss Gaviota and Diva Salvaje, Kaci Lennox, Sofia Castillo, Super Hero in Training, Alex Flash, Cha Cha Charlie, Santos, Jake St. Patrick, Stryker Ramirez and more.
