Florida Gators’ Freddie Swain goes to Seahawks in sixth round of NFL Draft

Another former Florida Gators wide receiver is off the board.

The Seattle Seahawks selected Freddie Swain in the sixth round — No. 214 overall — of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Swain, who grew up less than an hour away from UF in Ocala, played in 47 games with 10 starts during his four-year UF career. He caught 68 passes for 996 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was also a steady punt returner, averaging 7.9 yards per return. His 85-yard punt returned for a touchdown is the second longest in Gators history.

His best year came as a senior last season, when he caught 38 passes for 517 yards and 7 touchdowns. That included a six-catch, 146-yard, one-touchdown outing against the Auburn Tigers.

NFL analyst Lance Zierlein described Swain as an “intriguing height-weight-speed slot prospect with potential to challenge the field on all three levels.”

“Swain is a freestyle route runner with a lack of attention to detail and an addiction to a skip-stutter that is both predictable and inefficient. He needs to play faster underneath and with more physicality to improve his contested catch percentage,” Zierlein continued. “He has some suddenness that is waiting to be unlocked with more focused route-running. When his punt-return talent is added to the mix, there are enough checkmarks to believe Swain has a shot to be a Day 3 selection and a player who can win a roster spot at some point.”
