Where might Miami Hurricanes start NCAA tournament? A look at projections
The Miami Hurricanes approached the ACC baseball tournament for what it was. It’s a competitive event, yes, but it wasn’t something UM necessarily had to win in order to reach its greater goals.
That target, of course, is the NCAA tournament and hopefully a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Miami was going to see its name called in the 64-team field regardless of how it performed in Charlotte this week. With that in mind, coach J.D. Arteaga’s approach to the single-elimination tournament was to get as much playing time for his team as possible and avoid as much of a layoff as possible, especially for his pitchers.
“We’re not going to overextend anybody to try to win a game or win this tournament,” Arteaga said. “It’s kind of getting everybody ready for next week and then if the script plays out and the right guys are in situations to be in the game, then that’s what we’ll go with.”
The Hurricanes, ranked as the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament, won their first two games — 11-2 against No. 12 seed Stanford on Wednesday and 8-2 against No. 4 seed Boston College on Thursday — before falling to No. 1 seed Georgia Tech 9-3 on Saturday in the semifinals.
It was a productive run, but now Miami (38-18) waits to find out its path to a potential College World Series berth. That will be revealed during the NCAA selection show on Monday, which starts at noon and will be televised on ESPN2.
Where exactly they’ll play in the regional round is up in the air, but they will play on the road most likely as a No. 2 seed.
The selection committee this year is ranking the top 32 seeds and matching No. 2 seeds to regionals based on those rankings.
Teams ranked Nos. 17-20 will play at regionals hosted by teams ranked Nos. 13-16; teams ranked Nos. 21-24 will play at regionals hosted by teams ranked Nos. 9-12; teams ranked Nos. 25-28 will play at regionals hosted by teams ranked Nos. 5-8 seeds; and teams ranked Nos. 29-32 will play at regionals hosted by teams ranked Nos. 1-4 seeds.
No regional can have multiple teams from the same conference, so Miami wouldn’t be placed in a regional hosted by a conference opponent — namely Georgia Tech, North Carolina and FSU, the three ACC teams expected to host regionals.
D1Baseball has Miami projected to play in the Austin regional, which would be hosted by projected No. 6 national seed Texas. Louisiana and UC San Diego are the others in that regional, which would be opposite the Tallahassee regional hosted by FSU.
Baseball America also has Miami in the Austin regional, except it has Texas pegged as the No. 5 national seed. Tarleton State and Holy Cross are the others in the regional in this projection and they are opposite the regional hosted by Kansas.
11Point7 has Miami in the Gainesville regional hosted by Florida, which it has projected to be the No. 6 national seed. UCF and Florida A&M are the other teams pegged to that regional, which would be opposite the Hattiesburg regional hosted by Southern Miss.
