Rueben Bain Jr., a former Miami Hurricanes edge rusher projected to be a first-round pick in this month’s NFL draft, was involved in a 2024 car crash in Miami that led to a passenger’s death.

Bain was cited in March 2024 for careless driving after causing a crash that led to the incapacitation of a 22-year-old woman, who later died after spending three months in a coma. The charge was later dismissed by a court in May 2024, according to the case docket.

According to a crash report, first published Sunday by the newsletter The Read Optional, Bain was driving north on Interstate 95 in Miami at about 4 a.m. on March 17, 2024, when his 2021 Land Rover rear-ended another car before careening into concrete barriers on both sides of the highway before coming to a stop on the shoulder of the highway.

One of four passengers in Bain’s car, 22-year-old Destiny Betts, suffered incapacitating injuries and was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial from the scene, according to the report. Betts spent almost three months in a coma before she died on June 13, 2024.

A second passenger was hospitalized with injuries. Two other University of Miami players were also in the car at the time of the crash: linebacker Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly, the latter of whom later transferred to UCF.

There was no suspected alcohol or drug use, according to the report, and no field sobriety tests were given.

In a statement to The Read Optional, Betts’ family called the crash a “tragic accident” and said they “wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.”

Bain was entering his sophomore year at Miami at the time of the accident.

Bain finished his college career with 121 tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss and 20.5 sacks. He was instrumental last season as a junior in leading the Hurricanes to the College Football National Championship Game, completing the 2025 campaign with 54 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.

The three-day NFL Draft is April 23-25. Bain has been ranked as a near-consensus top-10 prospect.
