Hurricanes add in trenches with junior college offensive lineman commitment

The Miami Hurricanes landed a huge commitment — figuratively and literally — on Saturday night, with junior college offensive lineman Jacob Hawks announcing his oral pledge to UM.

Hawks, listed at 6-9 and 320 pounds, played his freshman season at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. He started every game last season at left tackle for Hutchinson that went 11-1 and finished as the junior college national runner-ups.

He is able to enroll at Miami this summer and will have three seasons of eligibility, plus a redshirt year.

He will immediately join a Miami offensive line room that is going through massive turnover. Four starters from UM’s offensive line last season — tackles Francis Mauigoa and Markel Bell, right guard Anez Cooper and center James Brockermeyer — are all gone.

As spring practice enters its final week, UM’s starting offensive line appears to include true freshman Jackson Cantwell and redshirt senior Matt McCoy at tackle spots, redshirt junior Samson Okunlola at left guard and sixth-year senior Ryan Rodriguez at center, with sophomore Max Buchanan a frontrunner for the final starting spot at right guard.

In addition to those five, Hawks joins a room that includes Georgia transfer Jamal Meriweather, sophomore SJ Alofaituli, redshirt freshmen Demetrius Campbell and Jaden Wilkerson, and true freshmen Ben Congdon, JJ Sparks and Joel Ervin, among others.
