Home runs, strong pitching leads Hurricanes to series-tying win over Boston College
Alex Sosa and Dylan Dubovik each hit home runs and had two RBI as the No. 24 Miami Hurricanes beat the Boston College Eagles 5-3 on Saturday at Mark Light Field to even their weekend series.
Senior right-handed pitcher Rob Evans put together a quality start on the mound, twirling seven innings of one-run ball for the Hurricanes (12-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Sosa’s home run, a 365-foot shot to right field in the third inning, was his sixth of the season, tying star third baseman Daniel Cuvet for the team lead. Dubovik followed with a solo shot of his own one inning later that went 385 feet to left-center field. It was the freshman’s fifth home run of the season and second of the series.
The home runs put Miami up 5-1 after the Hurricanes opened the game with a three-run first inning. Those runs came on a fielding error by Boston College left fielder Owen DeShazo on a Sosa fly ball, a Brylan West bases-loaded walk and a Dubovik sacrifice fly.
It was more than enough to back a stellar performance from Evans, who struck out eight batters while giving up just two hits and three walks over a career-long seven innings. The only run he allowed came on a Luke Gallo groundout in the second inning that scored Jack Toomey, who led off the inning with a double and reached third on a Gunnar Johnson groundout.
Since moving to the rotation the second weekend of the season, Evans has racked up 30 strikeouts in 18 innings of work.
Miami’s Jake Dorn gave up two runs in the eighth on a two-out double to Nick Wang that bounced off the glove of a diving Michael Torres and scored Ty Mainolfi and Julio Solier to cut the Hurricanes’ deficit to 5-3.
Packy Bradley-Cooney tossed a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.
The rubber game between the Hurricanes and Eagles (8-6, 1-1 ACC) is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Miami lost the series opener 8-7 in 11 innings on Friday.
