Promising Miami Hurricanes running back backs off plan to enter transfer portal
The Miami Hurricanes looked like they were going to lose a promising running back to the transfer portal on Wednesday night.
But one day later, that plan has been reversed.
Girard Pringle Jr., who flashed big-play potential in spurts during his freshman season, is no longer entering the transfer portal, on3 reported Thursday night. The news comes one day after it was reported the freshman running back was going to test the portal after one season at UM.
Pringle finished the 2025 season as Miami’s No. 3 running back behind junior Mark Fletcher Jr. and redshirt sophomore CharMar “Marty” Brown. He ran for 375 yards and four touchdowns on 62 carries in nine games of action, averaging 6.05 yards per carry. He ran for a season-high 116 yards in Miami’s win over NC State when Fletcher was sidelined with injury.
Miami’s running back room as of Thursday night for the 2026 season is Fletcher, Brown, Pringle, rising junior Jordan Lyle, rising redshirt sophomore Chris Wheatley-Humphrey and incoming freshman Javian Mallory.
The Hurricanes have had nine players enter the portal following Miami’s national title game loss to Indiana on Monday.
The group: quarterback Emory Williams; edge rusher/linebacker Malik Bryant; reserve linebacker Bobby Washington; backup offensive linemen Deryc Plazz, Nino Francavilla and Tommy Kinsler IV; backup defensive lineman Artavius Jones; reserve cornerback Jadais Richard; and freshman defensive back Amari Wallace.
They join seven Miami players who previously entered the portal in defensive linemen Donta Simpson (committed to Missouri) and Daylen Russell (committed to Louisville); wide receivers Ny Carr (committed to Wake Forest), Chane Robinson (committed to NC State) and Ray Ray Joseph (committed to East Carolina); tight end Brock Schott (committed to Indiana); and defensive back Charles Brantley.
