‘What I came here for’: Leading Miami into playoffs means ‘everything’ to Carson Beck

Quarterback Carson Beck made his intentions about this Miami Hurricanes team known right from the start.

“The goal is to win championships,” Beck said at the team’s media day before the start of fall camp. “That’s always the goal going into the season.”

Three-and-a-half months later, the Hurricanes are chasing a championship.

They made it into the College Football Playoff field as the No. 10 seed, with Miami (10-2) set to face the No. 7 Texas A&M Aggies (11-1) in a first-round matchup on Saturday at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas (noon, ABC/ESPN).

And Beck is a big reason why.

The veteran quarterback needed a new home for his final season of college football after bypassing the NFL Draft following a relatively disappointing 2024 season with the Georgia Bulldogs that ended with a torn UCL in his right elbow. He chose Miami because he felt the Hurricanes, after UM went 10-3 last year and barely missed the playoff field, has the best chance of his potential suitors to make a deep postseason run.

It was going to be a process, for both Beck individually and the Hurricanes as a whole. They knew there would probably be some struggles and growing pains as he began to trust himself again following a major operation and a new program put trust into his right arm.

But if they got out of the other side relatively unscathed and managed to get into the field, the chance to make a run would be palpable.

And when Miami’s name flashed across his TV screen on Dec. 7, Beck knew what it meant.

“That means everything,” Beck said. “I mean, this is what I came here for. Obviously, back a year ago, I was waiting to get surgery on my right arm, which it’s crazy how much can happen in a year. And here we are. It’s been one hell of a year. There’s been a lot of adversity that we’ve had to face as a team, that I’ve had to face individually. And that moment to see The U come up on the TV, I obviously was extremely excited. I’m ready for the opportunity. This team is excited to compete. We’re excited to go out there and show the product and the brand of what The U is and what it stands for and the culture of who we are. We’ve been preparing our butt off, and we’re ready to go compete.”

The Hurricanes have been in compete mode for over a month now. Ever since dropping two games in a three-week span — losing 24-21 to Louisville on Oct. 17 and 26-20 in overtime to SMU on Nov. 1, two defeats in which Beck threw six combined interceptions — Miami has essentially been in win-or-go-home situations ever since.

The team’s response was noticeable. They crushed their final four opponents, beating Syracuse, NC State, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh by a combined 151-41 score. Beck has elevated the offense with his efficient play, completing 89 of 112 pass attempts (79.46% completion rate) for 1,125 yards and 11 touchdowns with just one interception. His completion rate, passing yards per game (281.25), total passing touchdowns and passing touchdowns per pass attempt (9.82%) are all tops among the 12 starting quarterbacks in the playoff field in that stretch.

The confidence that might not have fully been there at points during the season is surely there now.

“To see a guy that that came in under so much scrutiny and having to recover from everything else to grow like he’s growing and now come down to the end playing his best football down the stretch, I think it’s awesome,” Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said. “It’s awesome to see how he approaches each and every day. He’s really, really driven. His practices have been outstanding.”

The Hurricanes will need his production to continue to be outstanding as the playoffs begin. Texas A&M’s defense is among the best in college football, particularly with a pass rush that has produced 41 sacks, tied for the most nationally. The Aggies are also one the best in the country on third down, holding opponents to just a 22.73% conversion rate.

“Poise is crucial — pocket awareness and poise,” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “He’s been in big games. This is nothing that he hasn’t been in. I do think that that matters. His poise is going to be basically contagious through the whole group. Look, at some point, both teams are going to come to a situation where it’s going to be a crucial time in the game, and we’ve got to make play. It’s no different on their side. The team that makes that play is probably going to win the game. Your best players have to be their best in those times. He’s very aware of that.”

And Beck’s also aware that he can’t make the moment too big. He has to keep his composure even in a rowdy road environment at a venue that officially seats nearly 103,000 but will likely have more packed into the stadium.

This is what he wanted. This is why he came to Miami.

It’s time to chase a championship.

“The atmosphere and the environment is gonna be next to none,” Beck said. “For us, what that means is focusing on our preparation. That’s all we can do is focus on our preparation. Obviously, we’re super excited for this opportunity, super excited for the challenge that this is gonna, you know, bring towards us. But again, all you got to do is focus on your preparation and continue to work each day, and then ultimately on Saturday, go out and execute.”
