Eye on the U: Going head-to-head with playoff committee on Miami’s resume
As it stands, the Miami Hurricanes’ biggest strength on its resume also appears to be one of the biggest strengths for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
That strength: Miami’s 27-24 win on Aug. 31 over ... Notre Dame.
Wait. What?
The Hurricanes are four spots below the Fighting Irish in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, which will ultimately determine the 12-team playoff field. Notre Dame is No. 9. Miami is No. 13.
The head-to-head matchup doesn’t factor in yet because, according to selection committee chair Hunter Yurachek, Notre Dame and Miami aren’t in the same “comparative tiers.” Notre Dame is above Miami because, according to Yurachek, the Fighting Irish’s losses are better than the Hurricanes’ losses.
Even though one of those Notre Dame losses is against Miami.
Miami Herald Hurricanes beat writer Jordan McPherson and deputy sports editor Andre Fernandez try to make sense of it all in the latest episode of “Eye on the U,” although we’re not sure how far they actually got in understanding the committee’s approach.
They then preview what’s still ahead for Miami, starting with a Saturday road game at Virginia Tech, and the various paths — committee willing — for the Hurricanes to get into the playoff.
