Nine notable stats from Miami Hurricanes win over NC State Wolfpack
The No. 15 Miami Hurricanes easily handled the NC State Wolfpack 41-7 on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive.
Here are nine notable stats from the win.
34: The Hurricanes outscored NC State by 34 points on Saturday. It marked the 10th time since joining the ACC that Miami won a league game by at least that many points, including the second time this season (a 42-7 win over Stanford). The Hurricanes’ largest margin of victory against an ACC opponent was 48 points, done in a 48-0 shutout of Duke on Dec. 5, 2020.
Additionally, Miami has five total wins this season by more than 25 points: Bethune-Cookman (45-3), USF (49-12), Stanford (42-7), Syracuse (38-10) and NC State (41-7).
7-1: Miami went 7-1 at home this season and outscored opponents by a combined 289-94 in games played at Hard Rock Stadium.
2: Safety Jakobe Thomas recorded a pair of interceptions in the first quarter against NC State and returned the first for a touchdown.
It triggered a slew of milestones...
He is the first Hurricanes player with multiple interceptions in a game since Te’cory Couch (Sept. 23, 2023 at Temple), the first in ACC play since Kam Kinchens (Nov. 12, 2022 at Georgia Tech) and first at home since Michael Jackson (Oct. 21, 2017 against Syracuse).
Thomas is the sixth Hurricanes player since 2000 to have a game with multiple interceptions and a pick-six.
The others:
- Kam Kinchens Nov. 12, 2022 at Georgia Tech
- Sean Taylor on Oct. 11, 2003 at Florida State
- Maurice Sikes on Sept. 7, 2002 at Florida
- Phillip Buchanon on Nov. 11, 2000 against Pittsburgh
- Ed Reed on Nov. 4, 2000, against Virginia Tech
Couple Thomas’ pick-six with the one Keionte Scott got a week earlier, and this marked the first time the Hurricanes have had pick-sixes in consecutive games since Nov. 11 and 18, 2017 — doing so against Notre Dame and Virginia.
Thomas now has four turnovers generated over the past two weeks with three interceptions and a fumble recovery. He is the third player this season to have four turnovers in a two-game span, joining SMU’s Ahmaad Moses and Akron’s Gage Summers.
581: Miami’s offense had a season-high 581 yards on Saturday. It’s the most yards for Miami against an ACC opponent since racking up 625 against (ironically enough) NC State on Nov. 6, 2020.
149: Miami’s defense held NC State to just 149 yards of total offense — 75 of which (just more than half) came on a garbage-time touchdown drive when the Hurricanes had a slew of reserves on the field.
It’s the third time this season Miami has held a team to fewer than 150 yards of offense, also doing so against Florida (141 yards) and Stanford (144 yards).
The Hurricanes held the Wolfpack to just a 3-for-12 rate on third down and didn’t allow NC State to get into Miami territory until that final, touchdown-scoring drive.
116: True freshman running back Girard Pringle Jr., making his first start of the season, ran for 116 yards on 17 carries.
The carries matched his season total entering the game. The rushing yards were 1 more than his season total entering the game.
289: Wide receiver Keelan Marion, who led Miami with seven catches and 96 yards on Saturday, has 15 catches for 289 yards over the past three games.
101: True freshman receiver Malachi Toney had 101 total yards from scrimmage — 54 receiving on five catches, a 3-yard rush and a 44-yard pass to Joshisa “JoJo” Trader. He also had two touchdown receptions.
4: The Hurricanes had four true freshmen in the starting lineup on Saturday in receivers Toney and Daylyn Upshaw, running back Pringle and nickel cornerback Bryce Fitzgerald.
