Live updates: No. 15 Miami Hurricanes rout NC State Wolfpack 41-7

If the Miami Hurricanes want a chance at making the College Football Playoff, at proving to the 12-person committee that they are worthy of a spot in the 12-team postseason field, they are going to need more games like the one they had Saturday down the stretch.

The 15th-ranked Hurricanes easily took care of the NC State Wolfpack with a 41-7 win at Hard Rock Stadium.

Miami improves to 8-2 (4-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play). NC State falls to 5-5 (2-4 ACC).

Will it be enough to sway the committee as Miami tries to maneuver through a logjam of two-loss teams vying for at-large bids into the postseason? We’ll have to wait until Tuesday when the latest rankings are released to know for sure.

But if nothing else, Saturday was arguably the most complete game the Hurricanes have played all season — a good sign considering the CFP selection committee has stressed the need for Miami to be more consistent down the stretch as it builds its resume.

Read the instant recap here.

More Miami points

A Malachi Toney touchdown was called off due to an illegal shift. Miami had to settle for a 38-yard field goal instead.

It’s 34-0 Miami over NC State with 3:51 left in the third quarter.

Hurricanes open second half with touchdown

Hello, Elija Lofton.

The sophomore, who has had a rough season thus far, hauled in a 29-yard touchdown from Carson Beck to extend Miami’s lead to 31-0 with 9:55 left in the third quarter.

Malachi Toney the WR catches a touchdown

Malachi Toney: Kid’s good

14-yard touchdown catch from Beck.

It’s 24-0 Miami over NC State with 33 seconds left in the first half.

And a reminder: Miami gets the ball to start the second half.

Malachi Toney the QB helps set up TD drive

A deep pass from Malachi Toney to JoJo Trader set up an eventual rushing touchdown from CharMar “Marty” Brown.

It’s 17-0 Miami over NC State with 11:16 left in the second quarter.

Another Jakobe Thomas interception

Jakobe Thomas with his second interception of the game. He is the first Hurricanes player with multiple interceptions in a game...

-against anyone since Te’cory Couch (9/23/23 at Temple)

-in ACC play since Kam Kinchens (11/12/22 at Georgia Tech)

-at home since Michael Jackson (10/21/17 vs Syracuse)

Pick six

Well... Jakobe Thomas pick six.

Third turnover for Thomas in the past two weeks and second consecutive game UM has had a pick-six (Keionte Scott vs. Syracuse)

10-0 Miami over NC State, 3:36 left in the first quarter.

Hurricanes turn the ball over

After forcing a three-and-out, Miami’s CharMar “Marty” Brown fumbled on a swing pass. NC State recovered near midfield.

It’s the first fumble the Hurricanes have lost this season.

Hurricanes open scoring

Miami went 77 yards on 11 plays but their drive stalled out in the red zone after the Hurricanes couldn’t convert their third third-down attempt of the drive.

They settle for a 31-yard Carter Davis field goal.

It’s 3-0 Miami over NC State with 7:13 left in the first quarter.

Other notes: Girard Pringle and Daylyn Upshaw started. Keelan Marion caught a 34-yard pass down the left sideline.

Outside of finishing the drive — which, obviously, is important — that was a good opening drive for Miami.

Defense starter notes

Freshman Bryce Fitzgerald received his first start of the season, filling in for the injured Keionte Scott. He had a pass breakup and a third-down tackle on NC State’s first drive, which ended in a punt.

Injury updates

Good news: wide receiver CJ Daniels and defensive tackle Ahmad Moten Sr. are both set to return after missing the past two weeks.

Bad news: The Hurricanes are still without four key players.
