Eight notable stats from Miami Hurricanes’ overtime loss to the SMU Mustangs

The No. 10 Miami Hurricanes dropped their second game of the season on Saturday, this time a 26-20 overtime defeat on the road to the SMU Mustangs at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Here are eight notable stats following the Hurricanes’ loss.

13-10: Mario Cristobal now has a 13-10 record against unranked opponents in conference play as the Hurricanes’ head coach. That includes a 1-2 record so far this season — with a win over Stanford and losses to Louisville and now SMU.

Overall, UM is 14-14 in ACC play under Cristobal.

12: The Hurricanes committed 12 penalties on Saturday, with 10 players — including six offensive linemen — being called for at least one.

SMU, meanwhile, was whistled for just four infractions.

2: Carson Beck had his third multi-interception game in eight starts for the Hurricanes. He has thrown nine picks total on the season — tied for the second-most among ACC quarterbacks (and behind only Cal true freshman Ben Gulbrandson) and three shy of what he threw last season at Georgia.

It’s the 17th time under Cristobal that UM’s offense has given up multiple turnovers. Miami is just 5-12 in those 17 games.

23: The Hurricanes held SMU to just 23 rushing yards on 25 attempts. It’s the first time the Hurricanes have held an opponent to that few rushing yards and lost since Sept. 4, 2006, when Miami held Florida State to 1 rushing yard on 25 carries in a 13-10 defeat.

7: But SMU was able to capitalize on offense by making big throws in the passing game. The Mustangs had seven passing plays that went for at least 20 yards against Miami. The Hurricanes had allowed only 14 such plays through their first seven games entering Saturday.

12: Why was SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings able to have such a dominant game (365 passing yards, one touchdown) despite a non-existent run game? A large factor was him having a relatively clean pocket. The Hurricanes only pressured him 13 times on 49 dropbacks, according to Pro Football Focus. The 26.5% pressure rate was a season-low.

Jennings thrived when he wasn’t facing pressure, completing 25 of 36 passes for 320 yards and one touchdown.

52: With nine catches for 70 yards on Saturday, true freshman Malachi Toney now has 52 catches for 632 yards and three touchdowns on the season. The 52 catches are the most ever by a UM true freshman — surpassing Ahmmon Richards’ mark of 49 set in the 2016 season — and are seven shy of tying Eddie Brown’s mark of 59 in the 1984 season for 10th all-time in Hurricanes history. The school record, for what it’s worth, is 79 set by Charleston Rambo in 2021.

81: After basically being a non-factor all season to this point, sophomore Joshisa “JoJo” Trader started on Saturday in place of the injured CJ Daniels. He delivered early, hauling in five catches for 81 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown in the first quarter on a contested catch.
