Live updates: No. 10 Miami Hurricanes fall in overtime to SMU Mustangs

The 10th-ranked Miami Hurricanes had their chances on Saturday.

But they also gave their best effort to dismantle those chances.

As such, their chances of accomplishing any of their goals this season are in extreme jeopardy.

Miami fell 26-20 in overtime to the SMU Mustangs at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, a loss that drops the Hurricanes to 6-2 and 2-2 in ACC play.

It came despite UM playing like the better team for a good chunk of the game but having to deal with self-inflicted mistakes that ultimately proved costly.

Read the recap here.

Another Carter Davis field goal

Hurricanes get one third down conversion on their first drive of the fourth quarter but can’t get a second.

They settle for a 45-yard Carter Davis field goal.

It’s 20-17 Miami over SMU with 9:34 left to play.

Tie game again

After a Hurricanes turnover on downs — Mark Fletcher Jr.’s run on 4th and 1 from the SMU 29 was stuffed — UM held SMU to just a 43-yard field goal.

It’s 17-17 with 7 seconds left in the third quarter.

Hurricanes retake the lead

Miami’s offense with a needed response drive. They go 75 yards on seven plays capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass from Carson Beck to Alex Bauman.

That was Bauman’s first touchdown catch of the season.

It’s 17-14 Miami over SMU with 9:06 left in the third quarter.

Overturned turnover costs Miami

The Hurricanes appeared to get off to a fast start to the second half, with Xavier Lucas forcing a fumble on a cornerback blitz and Rueben Bain Jr. recovering on the first play of the third quarter.

If only.

The play was overturned, with officials saying SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings threw an incomplete pass.

The Mustangs proceeded to go 79 yards down the field for a go-ahead touchdown, capped by Jennings’ 3-yard rush.

It’s 14-10 SMU over Miami with 12:11 left in the third quarter.

Canes take the lead

After the Hurricanes’ defense got another critical stop, a long Malachi Toney punt return set Miami up inside the SMU 10.

UM had to settle for a 22-yard field goal, but will go into halftime up 10-7.

Self-inflicted mistakes are crushing Miami

The Hurricanes are up to seven penalties with just under seven minutes left to play.

And now, after another stalled drive, Dylan Joyce hit a perfect punt... and yet somehow two different Hurricanes couldn’t keep the from staying out of the end zone.

A critical interception... and now it’s a tied game

Carson Beck threw his eighth interception of the season on a pass down the right sideline that Joshisa Trader bobbled and was ultimately taken by SMU safety Ahmaad Moses.

One play later And then Kevin Jennings finds a wide-open Yamir Knight for a 28-yard TD.

That’s the first time this season UM has allowed an opponent to score on the drive immediately following a turnover.

It’s 7-7 with 9:22 left in the second quarter.

Penalties kill a UM drive

The Hurricanes drove inside the Mustangs 25 yard line but two penalties — offensive pass interference on Malachi Toney and a hold by Francis Mauigoa — eventually set up third and 33 from the SMU 48.

Miami had to punt.

The lead is still 7-0 Hurricanes over SMU with 12 minutes left in the first half.

Touchdown Hurricanes

Hello, Joshisa Trader.

Carson Beck hits the sophomore receiver for a 36-yard touchdown. Trader did a fantastic job hauling in the contested catch. That capped an eight-play, 62-yard drive.

It’s 7-0 Miami over SMU with 4:16 left in the first quarter.

Canes get a stop

SMU had 4th and maybe a foot from the UM 36. Lined up to go for it. Calls timeout. SMU still goes for it. Runner drops it. Keionte Scott recovers the fumble.

First Hurricanes drive stalls

Miami’s first drive of the game stalled near midfield, with Carson Beck’s pass to Joshisa Trader on third and 13 from the Miami 37 falling two yards short.

UM punted.

Update: Three starters out

In addition to OJ Frederique being out, CJ Daniels and Ahmad Moten Sr. will also miss Saturday’s game against SMU.

Kickoff coming shortly.

At least one Hurricanes starter out

The Hurricanes got a key player back on Saturday against the SMU with edge rusher Akheem Mesidor returning to the starting lineup.

But they will, at minimum, be without one key player when they play the Mustangs.

Sophomore cornerback OJ Frederique Jr. is out for the Hurricanes against the Mustangs, according to the final availability report released by the ACC on Saturday morning.

Two other starters, wide receiver CJ Daniels and defensive tackle Ahmad Moten Sr., are listed as game-time decisions.
