Eye on the U: Can Hurricanes build on Stanford win in key road game with SMU?
The Miami Hurricanes put together a solid all-around win over the Stanford Cardinal last week, using a nearly perfect second half to pull away in a 42-7 win.
Now comes they key part: Carrying that momentum into what might be arguably their most critical game of the season.
The No. 10 Hurricanes (6-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) leave the state of Florida for the first time this season for a road game against the SMU Mustangs (5-3, 3-1 ACC) on Saturday (noon, ESPN).
While the game isn’t the marquee event it looked like it might be at the start of the season, it will still have major implications for both sides.
Each team only has one ACC loss and therefore is still in the race for the conference championship. UM hasn’t gotten to the ACC title game since 2017. SMU made it last year in its first year in the league and is looking for a repeat appearance.
It’s also key for Miami’s College Football Playoff hopes. UM has little, if any, room for error left after its loss to Louisville, so the Hurricanes need a strong showing on Saturday in Dallas.
And the game comes with UM facing plenty of faces from its past, with SMU led by former Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee. A slew of former Hurricanes are also part of this Mustangs team.
On the latest episode of Eye on the U, Miami Herald Hurricanes beat writer Jordan McPherson and deputy sports editor Andre Fernandez recap the Stanford game, preview the SMU matchup and take an overall look at the state of the ACC entering the final month of the regular season.
They also give a quick tease at what’s to come with the UM basketball teams, who start their seasons next month.
