Seven notable stats from the Miami Hurricanes’ win over the Stanford Cardinal
The No. 9 Miami Hurricanes rebounded from their first loss of the season with a resounding 42-7 win over the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium.
Here are five notable stats from the game.
35: Miami’s 35-point margin of victory is its largest against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since winning by 37 points against Duke on Nov. 27, 2021.
It’s the ninth time overall since Miami joined the ACC in 2004 that it has beaten a conference foe by at least 35 points. The full list, in descending order by date:
- Saturday: Miami 42, Stanford 7
- Nov. 27, 2021; Miami 47, Duke 10
- Dec. 5, 2020: Miami 48, Duke 0
- Sept. 26, 2020: Miami 52, Florida State 10
- Sept. 27, 2018: Miami 47, North Carolina 10
- Nov. 5, 2011: Miami 49, Duke 14
- Nov. 7, 2009: Miami 52, Virginia 17
- Oct. 8, 2005: Miami 52, Duke 7
- Nov. 20, 2004: Miami 52, Wake Forest 7
144: The Hurricanes held Stanford to just 144 yards of total offense. It’s the third-fewest yards UM has ever held an ACC opponent to since joining the conference in 2004, with only the team’s effort against Virginia Tech on Nov. 4, 2006 (139 yards) and Oct. 8, 2005 against Duke (128 yards) being better.
70: What’s probably even more impressive about that yardage total? Stanford scored a touchdown on a 74-yard drive to begin the game. After that drive, Miami held Stanford to just 70 yards the rest of the game over a span of 41 plays for just a 1.7 yards per play average.
23: After his three-touchdown performance on Saturday, running back Mark Fletcher Jr. now has 23 career rushing touchdowns on the season. That moves him past Clinton Portis for 10th all-time in a UM career.
The rest of the top 10:
1.) Stephen McGuire, 35 (1989-92)
2.) Edgerrin James, 32 (1996-98)
3.) Willis McGahee, 31 (2001-02)
4.) James Jackson, 29 (1997-2000)
T-5.) Duke Johnson, 26 (2012-14)
T-5.) Melvin Bratton, 26 (1984-87)
T-5.) Tyrone Moss, 26 (2003-06)
T-5.) Mark Walton, 26 (2015-17)
9.) Eddie Dunn, 25 (1936-38)
Additionally, Fletcher became the 14th Hurricanes player since 1995 to have a game with at least three rushing touchdowns. It’s the second consecutive year that a UM player has hit the feat after Damien Martinez did it in 2024.
Edgerrin James and Willis McGahee each did so four times during their Miami career.
On the season, Fletcher has 552 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. The touchdown total matches his career high set last season, and he is 55 yards shy of tying his single-season-best mark from a year ago. His nine rushing touchdowns are tied for 12th nationally and trail only Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King (12) in the ACC.
5: Fletcher’s three rushing touchdowns were part of a five-touchdown effort on the ground Saturday.
It’s the first time Miami has had at least five rushing touchdowns in a game against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent since doing so against Toledo on Sept. 15, 2018.
6: While Fletcher and the run game dominated in the second half for the Hurricanes, it was wide receiver CJ Daniels who opened scoring for Miami by hauling in a 5-yard touchdown over Stanford cornerback Collin Wright late in the first half to make the game 7-7 at the break.
It was Daniels’ sixth touchdown catch of the season, which ties Louisville’s Chris Bell and Clemson’s Bryant Wesco Jr. for the most in the ACC. Daniels has 33 catches for 351 yards this season.
Plus-2: The Hurricanes were a plus-2 in the turnover margin against Stanford after recording a pair of interceptions in the third quarter.
Miami is now 11-0 under coach Mario Cristobal when winning the turnover margin by multiple takeaways.
UM’s most recent loss when it has a turnover margin of plus-2 or better? Aug. 24, 2019, in a 24-20 loss to the Florida Gators in Orlando.
