Live updates: No. 2 Miami Hurricanes drop first game of season to Louisville

The Cardiac Canes made their first appearance on Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

But it wasn’t enough. It wasn’t meant to be.

The second-ranked Hurricanes, down by 14 in the first quarter and by 11 with nearly 13-and-a-half minutes left to play, got themselves within a field goal and got themselves in a position to tie the game only to lose 24-21 to the Louisville Cardinals for their first loss of the 2025 season.

Carson Beck’s fourth interception of the game — to T.J. Capers with Miami in field-goal range and less than a minute to play — sealed UM’s defeat.

Miami falls to 5-1 and 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Louisville improves to 5-1 and 2-1 in the ACC.

Read the full recap here.

Canes keeping this interesting

So here’s the rundown...

-Carson Beck intercepted on fourth and 4.

-Louisville’s Isaac Brown fumbles on the next play, with Keionte Scott punching out the ball and Zechariah Poyser recovering.

-Malachi Toney gets a 12-yard rushing touchdown AND throws the ensuing two-point conversion.

Just like that, Miami is only down 24-21 with 7:37 left to play.

Let’s get crazy?

Louisville pulling away

Touchdown Louisville. Chris Bell 36 yard touchdown. Slipped past multiple UM defenders on his way to the end zone. It’s 24-13 Louisville over Miami with 13:27 left to play.

Miami field goal

After each team exchanges punts, Miami’s Carter Davis kicks a 41-yard field goal to get UM back within four of Louisville.

Cardinals up 17-13 with 1:51 left in the third quarter.

Louisville gets a field goal

Miami goes three-and-out on its first drive of the second half and holds Louisville to a 48-yard field-goal on the Cardinals’ ensuing drive.

For the second time tonight, safety Jakobe Thomas nearly came down with an interception.

Louisville extends its lead to 17-10 with 10:58 left in the third quarter.

Hurricanes trail at halftime

Miami is down 14-10 at halftime to Louisville.

The defense has been stellar since those first two drives when it allowed touchdowns.

The offense, meanwhile, has wasted a few opportunities.

One thing to monitor going into the second half: Akheem Mesidor walked off the field with a minor limp on UM’s final defensive drive.

Canes get a field goal

A big play from Carson Beck to Malachi Toney — a 61-yard catch-and-run — gets Miami inside the Louisville 10-yard line but UM has to settle for a field goal attempt.

Carter Davis hits the 27-yard shot.

Miami within four, 14-10, with just under two minutes left in the first half.

A reminder: Hurricanes get the ball to start the second half.

Defense holds again after turnover

Louisville points off Beck turnovers: 0 Defense has stepped up since giving up TDs on the first two drives to keep it a one-score game with about five-and-a-half minutes left in the first half.

Meanwhile, true freshman Malachi Toney was called for his second penalty of the game on the ensuing punt return when he attempted to return the ball after signaling for a fair catch.

The Hurricanes, still down 14-7, will start on their 30 yard line.

Beck intercepted ... again

Carson Beck interception counter: 2

Pump faked and tried for Keelan Marion down the left sideline. Jabari Mack came up with it.

Hurricanes finally get pressure on Miller Moss

It took until midway through the second quarter, but the Hurricanes finally get a sack on Louisville quarterback Miller Moss.

Nickel corner Keionte Scott, who has come off the edge on blitz packages a few times already, got the sack.

Two plays later, Louisville punted again.

So all in all, Louisville fails to capitalize on the Carson Beck interception.

Beck intercepted

Carson Beck tries for a deep ball to Malachi Toney.

Picked off by Antonio Watts. Louisville had three defenders in the area. Toney was in front of all of them but the pass was just behind him.

Welp.

Defense gets pressure, forces a punt

Miami’s defense gets a needed stop near midfield.

Jakobe Thomas nearly had an interception on the drive but Louisville ultimately punts.

Hurricanes respond

Hurricanes running back Mark Fletcher Jr., on his birthday, scores on a 2-yard rush to cap a five-play, 75-yard drive.

Carson Beck hit CJ Daniels and Malachi Toney for 30 and 39 yards respectively on the first two plays of the drive to get Miami inside the Louisville 10-yard line before Fletcher took care of the rest.

Miami is back within 14-7 of Louisville, 2:19 left in the first quarter.

Another Louisville touchdown

Well... 35-yard catch-and-run TD for Chris Bell from Miller Moss after Louisville started with solid field position.

The Cardinals are up 14-0 on Miami with 5:09 left in the first quarter.

Canes three and out on first drive

Hurricanes go three and out on their first drive. An unnecessary roughness penalty on Francis Mauigoa put them in a third-and-20 situation.

Louisville is starting its second drive in Miami territory.

Not an ideal start for UM.

Louisville marches down field, uses trickery to set up touchdown

The Cardinals marched 75 yards down the field on 11 plays to open the game with a touchdown.

The critical play came on fourth and 2 from the Miami 4 yard line. The Cardinals lined up for a field goal, but holder David Chapeau took the snap and ran to his left for a 3 yard gain.

Quarterback Miller Moss then kept it himself for a 1-yard touchdown run on the next play.

It’s 7-0 Louisville over Miami, with 8:55 left in the first quarter.

No surprises with availability report

Everything is essentially status quo for the Hurricanes.

They have seven players listed as out but none were expected to be contributors.

The group: Defensive lineman Hayden Lowe, linebacker Bobby Washington Jr., wide receiver Chance Robinson, tight ends Dylan Reiman and Jackson Carver, and offensive linemen Ralph Scorggins and Demetrius Campbell.

Louisville has eight players listed as out: linebacker Stanquan Clark, quarterback Travis Egan, running backs Duke Watson, Jamarice Wilder and Shammai Gates, and offensive linemen Naeer Jackson, Mak Pounders and Tyler Folmar.

Also, Cardinals defensive lineman Micah Carter is a game-time decision.

Miami Hurricanes schedule
