It wasn’t always pretty on Saturday, but the Miami Hurricanes closed their non-conference slate undefeated.

Redshirt sophomore running back CharMar “Marty” Brown, a transfer from FCS national champion North Dakota State, scored two touchdowns — one to open the game, one to all but secure UM’s win — as the fourth-ranked Hurricanes beat the Florida Gators 26-7 at Hard Rock Stadium.

Mark Fletcher Jr. added a 1-yard rushing touchdown with 1:56 left to play to cap scoring.

The defense, meanwhile, dominated throughout, with first-year defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman’s unit holding Florida to 141 yards — with 80 of those yards coming on UF’s lone scoring drive — and 0 for 13 on third down with seven tackles for loss and four sacks. It’s the lowest single-game yardage under fourth-year Florida coach Billy Napier.

Read the instant recap here.

Defense gets a stop

UF goes for it fourth and 3 from the UM 33 to start the fourth quarter... It’s short.

Turnover on downs. That’s big for the Hurricanes.

Welp

Carson Beck intercepted on the first play after Florida’s touchdown.

Just ... yikes.

We have a game, folks

Touchdown Gators. Jadan Baugh from 7 yards out. That was an 80-yard drive over 11 plays — more than twice UF’s total yards (32) in the first half.

The Hurricanes’ lead now just 13-7 with 3:24 left in the third quarter.

Would be good for the offense to do something here.

Hurricanes nearly score. Alas...

On fourth and 1 from the UF 48 yard line, CharMar Brown appeared to have his second rushing touchdown of the game, but the play was ruled dead after a 3-yard gain because officials said his forward motion was stopped.

UM’s drive stalled after that, resulting in a punt on the first drive of the second half.

Halftime thoughts

The Hurricanes take a 13-0 lead over the Gators into halftime.

The offense has scuffled, but the defense has been fantastic. UF has just 32 total yards of offense, an average of 1.5 yards per play, has gone 0 for 7 on third down and has just one first down total.

That plays.

The offense has 198 yards, including 100 yards on the ground with a strong one-two push by Mark Fletcher Jr. and CharMar Brown.

Drives have stalled and the Hurricanes definitely have left some points on the board, but UM is handling business so far.

Offense has sputtered, but Miami extends its lead

Carter Davis is 2 for 2 on field goals after hitting a 28-yarder with 1:29 left in the second quarter.

Miami’s offense has sputtered a bit since that solid first drive of the game but the Hurricanes now have a 13-0 lead.

A reminder: The Hurricanes get the ball to start the second half.

Hurricanes tack on a field goal

Miami’s long, methodical drive stalls out two plays in to the second quarter. A snap infraction on James Brockermeyer and a Carson Beck sack made it 3rd and 24.

Beck then threw to Alex Bauman in the flat, who doesn’t look like he was expecting the snap.

Carter Davis salvaged the drive by making a 53-yard field goal attempt.

It’s 10-0 Miami over Florida with 14:04 left in second quarter.

That drive was 16 plays and covered 37 yards while taking up 8:19.

A dominant first quarter for the Hurricanes

End of first quarter: No. 4 Miami 7, Florida 0

Miami’s current drive has been going for 7:23. They have 2nd and 11 from the UF 22 when play resumes.

Hurricanes are out-gaining the Gators 116-5 so far and are 5 for 5 on third down (compared to 0 for 2 for Florida.

Perfect first drive for Miami’s offense

Miami’s running backs paved the way on the team’s first drive — a seven-play, 56-yard venture that ended with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by CharMar Brown. Brown also had a 22-yard catch-and-run two plays earlier on which he broke several tackles by the Gators defense.

7-0 Miami over Florida, with 9:25 left in the first quarter.

Perfect first drive for Miami’s defense

First drive of the game for the Miami defense went as follows:

-Rueben Bain and Xavier Lucas tackle for loss of Jadan Baugh

-Keionte Scott and Wesley Bissainthe tackle for loss of Baugh

-Marquise Lightfoot sack of DJ Lagway

Couldn’t draw that up much better.

College GameDay coverage

ESPN’s College GameDay was on campus in Coral Gables on Saturday morning to highlight the show.

The crowd was electric. Mario Cristobal fired up the fans and made a toast with cafecito. And two-time Stanley Cup champion Matthew Tkachuk served as the guest picker and emphatically chose the Hurricanes.
