Eye on the U: Early thoughts from spring football. Plus some basketball and baseball talk

Spring football is here!

The Miami Hurricanes are a week into their month-long spring practice regiment as they try to build on last year’s 10-3 season.

There are a lot of new faces: Carson Beck at quarterback instead of Cam Ward, a brand new secondary led by a brand new defensive coordinator in Corey Hetherman, a lot of young receivers trying to make their case for playing time.

There’s a lot to unpack between now and the spring game on April 12.

For now, Miami Herald Hurricanes beat writer Jordan McPherson and deputy sports editor Andre C. Fernandez recap the first week of camp on the latest episode of Eye on the U. They discuss early standouts, the latest on Beck as he continues rehabbing from elbow surgery and key story lines to follow.

After that, McPherson and Fernandez take a look at some former Hurricanes who have elevated their stock through the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine as they prepare for next month’s NFL Draft.

The show wraps up with some basketball and baseball talk. The Hurricanes men’s basketball team on Monday formally introduced new coach Jai Lucas, who has a tall task ahead of him in revamping a program that went from playing in the Final Four two years ago to winning just seven games this season. The baseball team is 12-6 entering Atlantic Coast Conference play following an up-and-down first month of the season.
