Another Miami Hurricanes legend has been named to the College Football Hall of Fame
Another Miami Hurricanes legend is on his way to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Linebacker Darrin Smith, a two-time first-team All-American who helped the Hurricanes to a pair of national championships, on Wednesday was named by the National Football Foundation as part of the 22-member 2025 College Football Hall of Fame Class. He will be officially inducted into the hall of fame on Dec. 9.
Smith, who played at Miami from 1989 to 1992, recorded 401 career tackles (fifth all time in UM history), 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 24 pass breakups during his four seasons for the Hurricanes. UM went 44-4 during his time, won national championships in the 1989 and 1991 seasons and never finished a season ranked lower than No. 3. This included one of Miami’s three perfect seasons, going 12-0 in the 1991 campaign en route to the school’s fourth national title. Smith and the Hurricanes defense played an integral part in that success, allowing an average of just 8.3 points per game and pitching a pair of shutouts — including a 22-0 win over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl to secure the national championship.
After his time with the Hurricanes, Smith was selected in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He played a dozen years in the league and won a pair of Super Bowls with Dallas.
Smith is the 11th Miami player and 16th person affiliated with the Hurricanes overall to be named to the College Football Hall of Fame. The group he joins: Bryant McKinnie (2023), Mark Richt (2023), Dan Morgan (2021), Dennis Erickson (2019), Ed Reed (2018), Vinny Testaverde (2013), Jimmy Johnson (2012), Russell Maryland (2011), Gino Torretta (2009), Arnold Tucker (2008), Bennie Blades (2006), Don Bosseler (1990), Ted Hendricks (1987), Andy Gustafson (1985) and Jack Harding (1980).
He was one of four Hurricanes on the ballot for this year. The others were Ken Dorsey, Sean Taylor and Larry Coker.
