A marquee quarterback is entering the transfer portal. Miami reportedly a favorite to get him
As the Miami Hurricanes look to sort out their quarterback situation for the 2025 season, an eye-opening development unfolded Thursday.
Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, who has one season of eligibility remaining, plans to enter the transfer portal, as first reported by on3. Beck had declared for the 205 NFL Draft on Dec. 28 in a since-deleted social media post.
ESPN reported that Miami “looms as the favorite” to land Beck, although Ohio State and Texas Tech are among the others who could be contenders, and that he plans to make his decision “within a week.”
The Hurricanes have a vacancy at quarterback after Cam Ward’s departure following his historic season at UM to cap his college career.
Ward, who transferred to Miami after two years each at Incarnate Word and Washington State, last season set the Hurricanes’ single-season school records for completions (305), passing yards (4,313), passing touchdowns (39) and completion percentage (67.2 percent).
With Ward gone, the Hurricanes’ internal quarterback options are Emory Williams, Judd Anderson and incoming freshman Luke Nickel, unless they nab a veteran from the transfer portal.
“Quarterback-wise, you always assess every position on your team and do everything you can to make it better,” Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said after the Pop-Tarts Bowl. “As it relates to personnel and personnel moves, and what we do in that, it’s something I never discuss publicly out of respect for our program and the players involved. But, we are always looking for ways to develop the guys within the program, and we are always bringing the best possible talent we can.”
As for Beck, he completed 68 percent of his career passes at Georgia for 7,912 yards and 58 touchdowns against 20 interceptions. He was the Bulldogs’ starter for the past two seasons.
Beck, a Jacksonville native who won a state title as a junior at Mandarin High, underwent surgery in late December to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow after sustaining an injury in the first half of the SEC Championship Game against Texas. He did not play for the Bulldogs in their College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against Notre Dame, a 23-10 loss in the Sugar Bowl.
Per ESPN, Beck is expected to miss spring practice while recovering from the surgery and won’t be able to throw until March but should be cleared for summer workouts leading up to the start of the season.
