The Miami Hurricanes now have to replace both starting safeties next season.

Redshirt sophomore safety Jaden Harris has entered the transfer portal, as first reported by 247Sports on Tuesday.

Harris started all 13 games for Miami last season, recording 40 tackles, three-and-a-half tackles for loss, one-and-a-half sacks, two pass breakups and an interception, which came in the Hurricanes’ season opener against the Florida Gators.

With Harris’ departure, Miami is now without both starting safeties from the 2024 season. Mishael Powell, who transferred to UM from Washington for his final season of college football, also departs after a season in which he led the team with five interceptions and also had 38 tackles and six pass breakups. The Hurricanes are also losing one of their starting cornerbacks in Daryl Porter Jr., who like Powell was out of collegiate eligibility after the 2024 season.

So who will replace them? Miami has added former Jacksonville State standout Zechariah Poyser in the transfer portal, and he should be a front-runner for one of the two spots. Poyser had 75 tackles and three interceptions and two fumble recoveries this season and had a sterling 57.4 passer rating in his coverage area. Opposing quarterbacks completed 33 of 69 passes in his coverage area for 316 yards (9.6 per reception) and three touchdowns. The 6-2 Poyser has two years of eligibility remaining.

Beyond Poyser, the Hurricanes have underclassmen Zaquan Patterson and Dylan Day who should get extended looks for playing time in 2025. UM also signed four-star safety Bryce Fitzgerald out of Miami Columbus in its 2025 recruiting class.

Harris is the second Hurricanes starter to leave via the transfer portal so far. Wide receiver Isaiah Horton is the other.
