Miami lands second tight end in a week with pledge from fast-rising recruit Reid Mikeska

The Miami Hurricanes have added a fascinating pair of tight ends to their Class of 2023.

For the second time this week, a 6-foot-6 athlete committed to Miami. Reid Mikeska is joining up with Jackson Carver after he orally committed to the Hurricanes on Sunday.

Mikeska announced his commitment on Twitter.

Although both are just three-star tight ends in the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2023 recruiting class, Mikeska and Carver are poised for potential breakout senior seasons since neither was a football player before last year.

Carver was mostly a hockey and lacrosse player throughout his childhood, and was getting recruited by the Dartmouth Big Green in hockey and committed at one point to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for lacrosse. Mikeska was always a basketball player until he decided to suit up for Bridgeland football team in Cypress, Texas, in 2021.

The move paid off, and Mikeska caught 24 passes for 229 yards and four touchdowns as a junior. He now claims more than 40 scholarship offers, all of which have come in the last eight months, and was orally committed to the Clemson Tigers for about a month earlier in the spring.

Like Carver, Mikeska also spent the weekend in Coral Gables on an official visit and decided he was ready to come to a decision after he left Miami, even canceling a previously planned official visit with the Florida Gators, which was originally set for this weekend. He narrowed his choices down to the Hurricanes and Oklahoma Sooners — he took an official visit to Oklahoma for the weekend of June 4 — and announced his decision Sunday.

He spent much of his weekend in Miami-Dade County with Carver and said, “Nothing has changed” after Carver committed Tuesday. The Hurricanes always had room to take two tight ends in their 2023 class, and Mikeska and Carver discussed the idea of playing together.

Mikeska said his decision would come down to where he’ll “fit in the most, where my heart is” and expressed extreme confidence in new coach Mario Cristobal’s vision for the future at Miami.

“They’re going to be a national-championship team in a couple years,” the 6-6, 232-pound receiver said.

With Mikeska and Carver now in the fold, the Hurricanes are up to seven players in their 2023 class with both tight end spots now locked up. They also hold commitments from three-star Miami Central wide receiver Lamar Seymore and four-star Palmetto athlete Robby Washington, who could play either play receiver or in the secondary.

The Hurricanes’ other commits are three-star LaSalle tackle Frankie Tinilau, three-star linebacker Bobby Washington — the twin brother and teammate of Robby Washington — and three-star interior lineman Antonio Tripp from McDonogh in Owings Mills, Maryland.

Mikeska is Miami’s second new addition of the day. The Hurricanes also added Colbie Young, an unranked wide receiver from a junior college, to their Class of 2022 earlier Sunday.
